Typical weights by month for each adult size. Individual puppies often sit 10–15% above or below these numbers.

Growth charts by breed

Breed charts use the adult weights from each breed's American Kennel Club profile, split by sex where the AKC gives separate weights.

How to read the chart

Each row is a puppy that ends up at a given adult weight. The columns show the typical weight at each age in months. If your puppy is 4 months old and weighs about 19 lb, the row for a 40 lb adult is the closest match, which suggests your puppy will end up around 40 lb.

The size class in brackets matters because dogs of different sizes grow at different speeds. Toy breeds reach adult weight at around 9 to 10 months, while giant breeds can keep growing until about 18 months or later.

Where the numbers come from

The chart uses the same growth curves as our puppy weight calculator: one curve per size class showing the share of adult weight a typical puppy has reached at each age. The curves are simplified approximations of the growth patterns described in published research on dog growth, including the growth standard charts for dogs of different sizes by Salt and colleagues (PLOS ONE, 2017).

A chart shows typical growth, not a target your puppy must hit. If your puppy stops gaining, loses weight, or looks very thin or round, ask your vet to check body condition.

Questions people ask

How much should my puppy weigh?

It depends on how big your dog will be as an adult. Find the row in the chart closest to the expected adult weight, or use the puppy weight calculator to estimate it from your puppy's current weight and age.

At what age is a puppy half its adult weight?

For medium dogs it's typically around 4 months. Toy and small breeds get there earlier, at around 3 to 4 months, and large and giant breeds later, at around 5 to 6 months.

When do puppies stop growing?

Most toy and small breeds reach adult weight between 9 and 12 months, medium breeds at about a year, large breeds at 12 to 15 months and giant breeds at 18 months or later.

Is my puppy overweight or underweight?

Weight alone can't tell you. Vets check body condition by feeling the ribs and looking at the waist from above. Ask your vet at the next visit if you're unsure.
