How cat years convert to human years

Cats grow up fast. Veterinary guidance from the American Animal Hospital Association, the American Association of Feline Practitioners and International Cat Care puts it this way:

  • The first year of a cat's life equals about 15 human years.
  • The second year adds about 9 more, so a 2-year-old cat is like a 24-year-old person.
  • Each year after that adds about 4 human years.

So for cats aged 2 and over: human age = 24 + 4 × (cat age − 2). A 10-year-old cat is about 56 in human years, and a 15-year-old about 76. Unlike dogs, cats vary little in size, so one chart fits almost all cats.

Cat life stages

The 2021 Feline Life Stage Guidelines from the American Animal Hospital Association and the American Association of Feline Practitioners group cats into these stages:

Mature adult7 to 10 years44–56

The guidelines also describe an end-of-life stage, which can happen at any age.

Questions people ask

How old is my cat in human years?

A 1-year-old cat is about 15 in human years and a 2-year-old about 24. After that, add 4 human years for each cat year: a 5-year-old cat is about 36, a 10-year-old about 56 and a 15-year-old about 76.

Is one cat year equal to seven human years?

No. Cats mature much faster than that in their first two years, then age more slowly. A 1-year-old cat is closer to a 15-year-old person than to a 7-year-old.

At what age is a cat considered a senior?

Under the 2021 feline life stage guidelines, cats are seniors from 10 years old. Cats aged 7 to 10 are mature adults.

How old is a 6-month-old kitten in human years?

The calculator spreads the first 15 human years evenly over the first year, so a 6-month-old kitten comes out at about 7 to 8. Kittens develop unevenly, so treat this as a rough guide.

Do indoor cats age differently from outdoor cats?

The conversion is the same, but indoor cats often live longer because they face fewer risks such as traffic, fights and infections. Their age in human years is calculated the same way.
