Large cat breeds

The biggest domestic cat breeds are also the slowest to grow up. These five can keep growing for years after their first birthday:

  • Savannah: males 11–25 lb; full size can take about 3 years.
  • Maine Coon: males 12–22 lb; full size can take 3–5 years.
  • Siberian: males 12–20 lb; full size can take 3–5 years.
  • Ragdoll: males 15–20 lb; full size can take about 4 years.
  • Norwegian Forest Cat: males 10–18 lb; full size can take up to 5 years.

The longest domestic cat ever measured was a Maine Coon, Stewie, at 48.5 in (123 cm), and the tallest living domestic cat is an F2 Savannah, Fenrir Antares Powers, at 18.83 in (47.83 cm), according to Guinness World Records.

Questions people ask

What is the largest domestic cat breed?

The Maine Coon is usually named as the biggest: TICA gives up to 22 lb for males, and CFA says 20 lb or more is not unusual. The Savannah is often taller, and Purina gives 12–25 lb for Savannahs, though TICA says they weigh less than other cats of a similar size.

How big is an average cat?

The average house cat weighs about 8–12 lb (3.6–5.4 kg), according to PetMD.

Which cat breeds take longest to grow?

Norwegian Forest Cats and Siberians can take up to 5 years, Maine Coons 3–5 years and Ragdolls about 4 years to reach full size, according to CFA, TICA and VCA.

Which cat breeds are small?

Of the breeds here, Siamese and Sphynx cats have the lowest weight ranges: TICA gives about 5–8 lb for female Siamese, and Purina gives 6–9 lb for female Sphynx.
