How the conversion works

Cats mature very quickly. By 6 months a kitten is roughly like a 10-year-old child, and by its first birthday it is about as grown up as a 15-year-old. In International Cat Care's words, the first two years "equate to 24 human years", and each year after that equals about 4.

For cats 2 years and older: human years = 24 + 4 × (cat age − 2). A 10-year-old cat is about 56, and a 15-year-old is about 76.

The old "multiply by 7" rule doesn't work for cats. It makes young cats far too young and old cats far too old.

Cat life stages

International Cat Care uses six stages: kitten (0–6 months), junior (7 months–2 years), adult (3–6 years), mature (7–10 years), senior (11–14 years) and super senior (15 years and up). Vets in North America often use the 2021 AAHA/AAFP Feline Life Stage Guidelines instead: kitten (up to 1 year), young adult (1–6 years), mature adult (7–10 years) and senior (over 10 years).

Life stage matters more than the human-year number: it decides how often your cat should see the vet and which food fits. For a calculator that also converts human years back to cat years, use the cat age calculator.
